Historic Coffee Houses
Around 1900, Budapest was the coffee house capital of the world — a meeting place for writers, journalists, and intellectuals. Some of these legendary places still exist:
- New York Kávéház: The “most beautiful coffee house in the world” (1894) — a riot of gold, marble, frescoes, and Belle Époque opulence. Located on the ground floor of the Boscolo Hotel. A coffee costs 2,500 HUF (€6), a cake 3,500 HUF (€9) — you pay for history and atmosphere. Erzsébet krt. 9–11.
- Café Gerbeaud: Since 1858 at Vörösmarty tér — the most elegant place for cakes and hot chocolate. The Dobos cake and the Esterházy cake are the stars. Touristy, but classic.
- Central Kávéház: In Károlyi utca — Budapest's intellectual coffee house, where writers and journalists sat. Breakfast and lunch menus are excellent and cheaper than at Gerbeaud.
- Café Fröhlich: In the Jewish Quarter — traditional Jewish bakery with Flódni (layered Jewish cake with apple, poppy seed, and walnut). Authentic and affordable. Dob utca 22.
