Packing List & Tips
What to Pack?
- Swimsuit/Swim trunks: THE most important! The thermal baths are a must — without swimwear, you'll miss Budapest's main attraction.
- Comfortable shoes: Pest is flat (good for sneakers), but Buda has hills and cobblestones. The Gellért Hill climb requires sturdy soles.
- Flip-flops/Water shoes: For the thermal baths — the floors can be slippery.
- Warm clothing (winter): Budapest gets really cold in winter (–5 to –15°C). Warm jacket, hat, gloves, scarf. But: You only need 5 minutes from the thermal bath entrance to the 38°C pool.
- Light layers (summer): In summer 35°C+ — light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a water bottle.
- Travel adapter: Not needed — Type C/F (German plugs) fit in Hungary.
Important Notes
- Tipping: In restaurants: 10% is customary. When paying, tell the waiter the desired amount (including tip) directly: "4,500, kérem" (instead of 4,000 HUF). NEVER leave the tip on the table — it's considered rude. In thermal baths: 200–500 HUF for the lifeguard/cabin attendant.
- Sunday Opening: Most shops are closed on Sundays (by law!). Exceptions: supermarkets in train stations, gas stations, and some stores in shopping centers. Restaurants, cafés, and thermal baths are open on Sundays.
- Smoking Ban: In all enclosed public spaces (restaurants, bars, clubs). Smoking is done outside or on terraces.
- Tap Water: Drinkable and good. In restaurants, mineral water (ásványvíz) is served by default — "csapvíz" (tap water) is free, but you must explicitly ask for it.
💡 Tipp
Download the apps "BKK Futár" (real-time public transport, route planning) and "Bolt" (taxi/ridesharing). For restaurants: "TheFork" offers discounts at many venues. Google Maps works excellently offline — download the map before your trip.
