What does Ecuador cost?
Ecuador is significantly cheaper than Colombia, Chile, or Argentina and comparable to Peru and Bolivia. Since the US dollar is the national currency, there are no exchange rate surprises. Prices on the mainland are 50–70% below German levels. Galápagos is a category of its own — costs are significantly higher there.

Budget Levels
Backpacker / Budget (25–40 USD per day, mainland)
Ecuador is a backpacker paradise. Hostels cost 8–15 USD, the Almuerzo (daily menu with soup, main course, juice, and sometimes dessert) is available for 2.50–4 USD — the best value for money in South America. Buses are extremely cheap (1 USD per hour of travel), street food (Empanadas, Bolón, Encebollado) costs 1–3 USD. Entry to churches and museums is often free or under 5 USD.
Mid-range (50–100 USD per day, mainland)
Comfortable hotels or charming haciendas, a mix of street food and restaurants, occasional guided tours (Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, Mindo). In this category, you experience Ecuador in full comfort without having to think much. Taxis within cities cost 2–5 USD.
Comfort / Luxury (150–400+ USD per day)
Boutique hotels in Quito's old town, exclusive haciendas in the highlands, premium lodges in the Amazon, and Galápagos cruises on luxurious yachts. Private guides, helicopter transfers, and fine dining in Quito — Ecuador can also be truly high-end.
Special Case Galápagos
The Galápagos Islands are the biggest cost factor: flight (350–500 USD return), national park fee (100 USD), Transit Control Card (20 USD). Additionally, there are accommodations and tours on-site. Budget option: Island hopping with overnight stays on Santa Cruz and Isabela (from 80 USD/day including day tours). Cruise option: From 250 USD/day all-inclusive, sometimes cheaper last minute.
Tipp
The number one Ecuador saving hack: The Almuerzo. This lunch menu is available in even the smallest places for 2.50–4 USD — soup, main course (usually rice with meat/fish, salad, plantain), juice, and sometimes dessert. The best meal of the day and hardly cheaper.
Saving Tips
Ecuador doesn't have to be expensive — even Galápagos can be affordable with the right strategies:
- Galápagos Last-Minute: Cruise ships that aren't full offer last-minute spots in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz) with 30–50% discount. Risky but rewarding — best to plan 2–3 days on-site and ask the agencies at the harbor.
- Galápagos Island Hopping instead of Cruise: Independently visit Santa Cruz and Isabela, book day tours (from 80 USD), stay in simple hotels. Significantly cheaper than a cruise and more flexible.
- Buses instead of Flights: Ecuador's bus system is excellent and dirt cheap. Quito–Guayaquil costs 10–12 USD (8h), Quito–Baños 4–5 USD (3.5h). Night buses save a hotel stay.
- Almuerzo Strategy: Always eat the Almuerzo at lunchtime (2.50–4 USD). In the evening, a snack from a street stand is often enough. This way, you stay under 10 USD/day for food.
- Couchsurfing & Volunteer Programs: Ecuador has an active Couchsurfing community, especially in Quito and Cuenca. Workaways and volunteer programs in hostels, farms, and NGOs offer accommodation in exchange for work.
- Bargaining at Markets: Bargaining is expected at craft markets (Otavalo!) — friendly but firm. 20–30% discounts are common.
- Tipping: In simple restaurants, no tip is expected. In upscale restaurants, 10% is customary (sometimes already listed as "servicio" on the bill).
- Withdrawing Money: Banco del Pacífico has the lowest fees for foreign cards. ATM fee: about 0.50–1.50 USD. Maximum amount per withdrawal: usually 300–500 USD.
