Cruise or Island Hopping?

There are two fundamental ways to experience Galápagos — each with its pros and cons:

Option 1: Cruise (Live-Aboard)

You sleep aboard a ship (16–100 passengers) and visit different islands during the day with a National Park-certified guide. At night, the ship sails to the next island.

  • Advantages: You reach remote islands (Española, Fernandina, Genovesa) that are not feasible by day trip. Everything is organized — meals, transfers, equipment. You see more in less time.
  • Disadvantages: More expensive (from 250 USD/day, premium: 400–800 USD/day). Fixed schedule, no flexibility. Seasickness possible (especially June–November, when the sea is rougher).
  • Duration: 4–8 days (5 days ideal). 4-day tours are sensible to get a good cross-section.
  • Recommendation: For first-time visitors who want to experience the maximum and for nature lovers who also want to see the remote islands.

Option 2: Island Hopping

You stay in hotels on the inhabited islands (Santa Cruz, Isabela, San Cristóbal, Floreana) and book day tours to nearby visitor sites on-site.

  • Advantages: Significantly cheaper (from 80 USD/day incl. hotel and day tours). More flexible — you set the pace and program. Contact with the local population. More time at the beaches and for snorkeling.
  • Disadvantages: You only reach the islands near the inhabited places. Remote highlights (Española, Fernandina, Wolf, Darwin) are only accessible by cruise. More self-organization required.
  • Route: Typical: Santa Cruz (2 nights) → Isabela (2–3 nights) → San Cristóbal (1–2 nights). Speedboats between the islands: 30 USD, 2–2.5 hours.
  • Recommendation: For budget travelers, for those who want to be flexible, and for snorkelers who have time.

The Golden Middle

The optimal strategy for many travelers: 5 days cruise + 2–3 days island hopping. This way, you experience the remote islands by boat and then have time to explore the inhabited islands on your own — including Tortuga Bay, Los Túneles, and Kicker Rock.

💡 Tipp

Galápagos Last-Minute: In Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz), agencies along Charles Darwin Avenue offer last-minute spots on cruise ships that haven't filled up. Discounts of 30–50% are possible — but only if you plan 2–3 flexible days on-site and have no fixed date.
