Modern Ecuador

Ecuador's recent history is marked by Rafael Correa, who governed from 2007 to 2017. The economics professor initiated the "Citizens' Revolution": a new constitution (2008), massive investments in infrastructure, education, and health, financed by high oil prices. The 2008 constitution is unique worldwide — it grants nature its own rights (Rights of Pachamama) and is the first constitution to enshrine the concept of Buen Vivir (good living, in Quechua: Sumak Kawsay) as a state goal.

The years after Correa were marked by economic difficulties: falling oil prices, the COVID pandemic, and growing security problems due to drug trafficking. Ecuador lies on the transit route of Colombian cocaine to North America, leading to an increase in violence, especially in the port cities (Guayaquil, Esmeraldas).

Despite these challenges, Ecuador remains a fascinating, hospitable, and safe travel destination. The tourist areas are hardly affected by security issues, and Ecuadorians welcome visitors with a warmth unmatched in South America. Tourism is the third most important economic sector after oil and shrimp — and Ecuadorians are well aware of its value.
