Money-Saving Tips
Edinburgh doesn't have to be expensive — especially outside the August festival season:
- Free Attractions: National Museum of Scotland, Scottish National Gallery, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Modern Art Galleries, St Giles' Cathedral, Princes Street Gardens, Greyfriars Kirkyard, Arthurs Seat, Calton Hill, Dean Village — all free!
- Royal Edinburgh Ticket: Combo ticket for Edinburgh Castle + Palace of Holyroodhouse + Royal Yacht Britannia (saves about 15% compared to buying individually). Worth it if you want to see all three.
- Pub Lunch: Many pubs offer affordable lunches between 12 and 2 PM (£8–12) — often better food than in tourist restaurants. "2 for 1" deals are common.
- Fringe Shows at Bargain Prices: In August, there are hundreds of free shows (known as "Free Fringe"), and many paid shows offer discounted preview tickets or last-minute deals. The best street performers on the Royal Mile only cost a voluntary hat donation.
- Bus Instead of Taxi: Edinburgh's Lothian Buses are cheap (£1.80 single ride, £4.80 day ticket) and go everywhere. The tram connects the airport with the center (£7 single).
- Tap Water: Scottish tap water is excellent — never buy water!
- Student/Senior Discounts: Almost all attractions offer reduced entry fees. Have your ID ready!
- Travel Outside of August: Hotel prices in August are 2–3 times higher than the rest of the year. September offers almost the same weather at a fraction of the cost.
