The Four Seasons

Spring (April–May): The Great Awakening

The lakes thaw, the days rapidly lengthen (up to 6 minutes more light per day!), and nature literally explodes. In May, the birches bloom, and temperatures rise to 5–15°C. In Lapland, there is often still snow — perfect for spring ski tours under the sun. Spring is ideal for bird watching: millions of migratory birds return.

Summer (June–August): Midnight Sun & Mökki Time

The most beautiful season for most visitors. Temperatures range from 15–25°C (occasionally over 30°C!), endless days, warm lakes for swimming. Finns retreat to their Mökkis (summer cottages) by the lake — and you should do the same. Peak season is from Midsummer (Juhannus, around June 21) to the end of July. August is the best month for berries and mushrooms.

Beware of mosquitoes! From mid-June to early August, mosquitoes in Lapland and the lake district can be brutal. Pack mosquito repellent (with DEET) and a head net!

Autumn (September–October): Ruska — Finland's Indian Summer

The Ruska (Finnish autumn colors) transforms Lapland into a sea of gold, red, and orange — the most spectacular autumn colors in Europe. Mid-September to early October is the best time. Simultaneously, the Northern Lights season begins. Fewer tourists, falling prices, and magnificent light for photography. Temperatures: 5–15°C in the south, 0–10°C in Lapland.

Winter (November–March): Snow Magic & Northern Lights

The Finnish winter is long, dark, and magical. From November, there is snow, which remains until April. Temperatures in Lapland: -20 to -40°C (the cold record is -51.5°C!). However, the dry cold is more bearable than humid 0°C in Germany. The winter highlights are unbeatable: Northern Lights, dog sledding, reindeer rides, ice fishing, snowshoeing, glass igloos. Best Northern Lights time: September–March, peak time December–February.

💡 Tipp

Most tourists come in summer (July) and winter (December–February). For fewer crowds and better prices: September (Ruska + Northern Lights begin) or May (spring, long days, hardly any tourists).
