Climate Overview
Finland stretches over 1,160 kilometers from south to north — equivalent to the distance from Munich to Sicily. Accordingly, the climate varies significantly:
| Region | Summer (Jun–Aug) | Winter (Dec–Feb) | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helsinki & South | 15–25°C | -5 to -15°C | Mildest climate, short winters |
| Lake District | 15–25°C | -10 to -20°C | Continental, extreme temperature fluctuations |
| Archipelago Coast | 15–22°C | -3 to -10°C | Maritime moderate, rarely extreme frost |
| Lapland | 10–20°C | -15 to -40°C | Arctic, up to 200 snow days/year |
Daylight is the crucial factor: In December, Helsinki has only 6 hours of daylight, in northern Lapland, there is polar night (kaamos) — the sun does not rise at all. In June, however, the sun hardly sets in Helsinki, and in Lapland, the midnight sun shines around the clock.
