Rovaniemi & Santa Claus
Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland and is located right on the Arctic Circle. The city was almost completely destroyed during World War II and rebuilt according to plans by Alvar Aalto — the city layout resembles a reindeer's antlers from above.
Santa Claus Village
The Santa Claus Village (Joulupukin Pajakylä) is located 8 km north of the center directly on the Arctic Circle. Here, the Santa Claus (Joulupukki) welcomes visitors year-round in his grotto — free of charge! (Photos: from 35€). Other attractions:
- Arctic Circle Line — Marked on the ground, perfect for the "I crossed the Arctic Circle" photo.
- Santa Claus Post Office — Here, 500,000 letters from around the world are answered annually. You can have a letter sent to yourself that arrives at Christmas.
- Santa Park — An underground Christmas theme park in a cave. Great for families with children. Admission: 39€ (children 32€).
- Snowman World — Igloo restaurant and ice bar in winter. Drink cocktails from ice glasses.
Best time to visit: November–January (Christmas atmosphere, snow, Northern Lights). In summer, the village is less atmospheric, but activities are cheaper, and the Midnight Sun is a bonus.
Arktikum
The Arktikum is Rovaniemi's main museum: a spectacular glass building on the Ounasjoki River with two permanent exhibitions — about the Arctic region (nature, climate change, wildlife) and the history of Lapland (Sami culture, war, reconstruction). Admission: 18€. Absolutely worth seeing.
Ranua Wildlife Park
The Ranua Zoo (80 km south of Rovaniemi) houses Arctic animals in a natural environment: polar bears (the only ones in Finland), wolves, lynxes, wolverines, moose, and musk oxen. A great day trip, especially for families. Admission: 22€ (children 18€).
