Summer in Lapland
Lapland's summer is the exact opposite of winter — and at least as impressive. From June to August, the sun doesn't set north of the Arctic Circle (Midnight Sun), temperatures climb to 15–25°C, the fells bloom in wildflowers, and the endless days make anything possible.
Midnight Sun
In Utsjoki (Finland's northernmost place), the sun shines continuously from May 17 to July 27 — 73 days without sunset. In Rovaniemi (Arctic Circle), it's about 30 days. The Midnight Sun creates an euphoria that must be experienced: hiking at 11 PM in golden light, fishing at midnight, grilling by the lake with the sun still up. Pack a sleep mask!
Hiking in Lapland
Lapland has some of Europe's most beautiful long-distance hiking trails:
- Kungsleden/Hetta–Pallas Hike — 55 km through the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park over treeless fells with endless views. 3–5 days, free wilderness huts along the way. One of Finland's best treks.
- UKK Trail — 240 km from Koli in the lake district to Saariselkä in Lapland. Can be hiked in stages.
- Lemmenjoki National Park — Europe's largest forest wilderness reserve. Gold panning area, boat trips, Sami culture. Little visited, lots of wilderness.
- Urho Kekkonen National Park — Near Saariselkä. Day hikes and multi-day treks. In autumn (September), spectacular Ruska colors.
Gold Panning
Gold has been panned at Lemmenjoki and Tankavaara since the 19th century. Today, you can try it yourself: rent a gold pan (from 10€), dig in the river, and with some luck, find gold flakes. The Gold Museum Tankavaara tells the story of the gold rush in Lapland.
Fishing
Lapland's rivers are a paradise for anglers: salmon, trout, grayling, and pike in crystal-clear waters. At the major salmon rivers (Teno, Tornio, Muonio), you need a license (from 7€/day online). Fly fishing for sea trout at the Teno is world-class.
💡 Tipp
Mosquito repellent with DEET (at least 30%) and a head net are essential for survival in Lapland in summer. The mosquitoes (hyttyset) and blackflies (mäkärät) can be brutal from mid-June to early August. Wind and open fells are mosquito-free, forests and swamps are strongholds.
