Monasteries & Cultural Sites
★★★ Alaverdi Cathedral
The Alaverdi Cathedral (11th century) is the second-highest church dome in Georgia and a masterpiece of medieval architecture. It stands freely in the plain of the Alazani Valley, surrounded by a wall with defensive towers — a mighty cathedral amidst vineyards. The monastery produces its own wine and still houses monks today. Inside: remnants of frescoes and an atmosphere of deep spirituality.
15 km northwest of Telavi. Free. Modest dress code (skirts/scarves for women available for loan at the entrance).
★★ Gremi — Fortress and Church
The picturesque Archangel Church (16th century) sits atop a hill above the ruins of the former capital of Kakheti. Gremi was a flourishing trading city on the Silk Road in the 15th–17th centuries — until it was destroyed by the Persians in 1615. The church with its three-story bell tower and the remains of the royal palace are excellently preserved. Panoramic view over the Alazani Valley.
20 km northwest of Telavi, on the main road. 3 GEL.
★★ Nekresi Monastery
The Nekresi Monastery (6th century) is dramatically located on a ridge above the Alazani Valley. It is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in Georgia and houses one of the earliest churches in the country (4th century). The approach is via a steep, winding road (shuttle bus from the parking lot) — the view from above is worth the effort.
25 km northwest of Telavi. Shuttle from parking lot (1 GEL). Free.
★★ Tsinandali — Winery & Museum
The Tsinandali Estate was the country seat of the Chavchavadze noble family in the 19th century — Georgia's version of a European castle. Prince Alexander Chavchavadze was the first to introduce European winemaking methods in Georgia. Today: A well-maintained museum with original furnishings, a beautiful park, and one of Georgia's oldest wine cellars (with bottles from the 19th century). Regular classical concerts in the park.
8 km east of Telavi. 7 GEL. Wine tasting extra. Daily 10–18.
