Sighnaghi — The City of Love

★★★ Sighnaghi

Sighnaghi (სიღნაღი) is a fairy tale in stone and terracotta. The small town (2,000 inhabitants) is perched on a hill ridge at 790 m above the vast Alazani Valley — surrounded by vineyards, with views of the snow-capped peaks of the Greater Caucasus on the horizon. At sunset, when the mountains glow golden and the tiled roofs shimmer in warm light, the sight is unrealistically beautiful.

Sighnaghi is called the "City of Love" because you can get married here around the clock — a civil registry rule that tempts Georgian couples into spontaneous marriages. Accordingly, the atmosphere is romantic: cobblestone streets, vine-covered balconies, small wine bars, and hidden courtyards.

What to See

  • City Wall: Sighnaghi has a remarkably well-preserved city wall from the 18th century, 4.5 km long with 28 defensive towers. You can walk along sections of the wall — the views are magnificent.
  • Sighnaghi Museum: Surprisingly good museum with works by painter Niko Pirosmani (Georgia's most famous artist, a naive painter of the early 20th century) and archaeological finds from the region. 7 GEL.
  • Wine Cellar Visits: Several wineries and cellars offer tastings. Pheasant's Tears (one of Georgia's best-known natural wineries) has its cellar here.
  • Bodbe Monastery: 2 km outside Sighnaghi lies this important monastery, which houses the Tomb of Saint Nino — the woman who Christianized Georgia in the 4th century. A sacred place for all Georgians. Well-kept garden with panoramic views. Free.

Getting There

Marshrutka from Tbilisi: From Ortachala bus station, 2h, 7 GEL. Several times daily. Taxi: Around 70–100 GEL (20–30€) from Tbilisi. Sighnaghi is a perfect day trip or a 1–2-night stay.

💡 Tipp

Stay overnight! Sighnaghi at sunrise, when the morning mist lies over the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus peaks glow in the first light, is a sight you'll never forget. The guesthouses (from 40 GEL/night) often offer breakfast with homemade wine, cheese, and fruit.
