Border Crossings
Guatemala has land borders with four countries — perfect for a Central America tour:
Mexico
- La Mesilla (Huehuetenango): Main crossing for travelers to San Cristóbal de las Casas (Chiapas). Shuttle from Antigua or Quetzaltenango.
- El Ceibo (Petén): Crossing to Palenque (Chiapas) — ideal if you want to go from Flores/Tikal to Mexico.
- Frontera Corozal/Bethel: Boat crossing over the Río Usumacinta — adventurous, only for the hardy.
Belize
- Melchor de Mencos: The only land crossing to Belize. Buses from Flores (2h). Continue to Belize City (3–4h from the border).
Honduras
- El Florido: For the Mayan ruins of Copán (Honduras). Shuttle from Antigua (5–6h) or Guatemala City.
- Agua Caliente: For travelers to Tegucigalpa or the Bay Islands.
El Salvador
- San Cristóbal / Valle Nuevo: For travelers to San Salvador. Buses and shuttles from Guatemala City.
Important: At all borders, you pay an exit fee of about 10 Quetzales. At some borders, unofficial "helpers" may try to charge you for supposed stamps or services — don't be intimidated and only pay at official counters.
