Activities on the Lake
Climbing Volcano San Pedro
The Volcán San Pedro (3,020 m) is the most popular volcano hike on the lake. Start in San Pedro La Laguna, 4–5 hours ascent through coffee plantations and cloud forest, at the top a magnificent panoramic view over the entire lake. Guide: Mandatory (safety + access through private land, about 15€). Difficulty: Medium — good fitness required, partially steep.
Indian Nose (Nariz del Indio) — Sunrise
The shorter alternative to the big volcanoes: An easy hike (1–1.5h) to the Indian Nose viewpoint near Santa Clara, where you can experience the sunrise over the lake and the volcanoes. Tours start at 4:00–4:30 AM from Panajachel or San Pedro (about 10€ including transport). One of the best value-for-money experiences in all of Guatemala.
Kayaking
One of the most beautiful ways to experience the lake. Paddle from San Marcos or Santa Cruz, glide along the steep wooded shores, swim in hidden coves. Kayaks can be rented in most places for about 5–10€/hour. Note: In the afternoon, the Xocomil — a strong wind — comes, whipping up the lake. Paddle in the morning!
Experience Weaving Art in San Juan
In San Juan La Laguna, cooperatives of Maya women will show you the entire process of traditional textile production: from growing cotton to dyeing with natural pigments (insects, plants, volcanic earth) to weaving on the backstrap loom. Workshops: 2–3h, about 10–15€. You buy directly from the artisans — fair and authentic.
Visit Maximón in Santiago Atitlán
Maximón (also Rilaj Mam) is a fascinating syncretistic figure: half Maya deity, half Catholic saint, half vagabond. His life-sized figure changes houses annually (ask at the boat dock which one — the locals will show you). Visitors bring him rum, cigars, and candles as offerings. An experience found nowhere else in the world. Entry: Donation (10–20 GTQ common).
Cacao Ceremonies
Traditional cacao ceremonies are offered in San Marcos and San Pedro — a spiritual ritual with ceremonially prepared cacao, singing, meditation, and intention-setting. The Maya revered cacao as a sacred drink. Price: 10–25€.
💡 Tipp
The best way to experience Atitlán: Get a Lancha day ticket (or pay per trip, about 10–25 GTQ between locations) and hop from village to village. Morning in San Juan (weaving art), noon in Santiago Atitlán (Maximón + lunch), afternoon in San Marcos (yoga + swimming). Perfect day.
