Practical Information for Atitlán
Getting There
Panajachel is the main gateway to the lake. From Antigua: Shuttle in 2.5–3h (about 10–15€). From Guatemala City: Bus or shuttle in 3–3.5h. From Chichicastenango: Shuttle or chicken bus in 1.5h. From Panajachel: Lanchas (boats) to all lakeside locations.
Lanchas (Boats)
The Lanchas are the main mode of transport on the lake — fast motorboats that travel between the villages. Main route: Panajachel → San Pedro → San Juan → San Marcos → Santa Cruz → Jaibalito → Panajachel. Prices: 10–25 GTQ per route. Last boats: around 5:00–6:00 PM. Note: In the afternoon, the Xocomil wind can whip up the lake — making the rides bumpy.
Accommodation
- Panajachel: The widest range from budget to upscale hotels. Convenient for day trips.
- San Pedro: Backpacker paradise with the cheapest hostels (from 4€/night).
- San Marcos: Yoga retreats and quiet eco-lodges. A bit more expensive, but worth the tranquility.
- Santa Cruz: Remote and stunning — eco-lodges on the steep shore with lake views. Only accessible by boat.
Weather
The lake enjoys a pleasant climate year-round: 18–25°C during the day, 10–15°C at night. Sunny in the morning, often cloudy or rainy in the afternoon (especially May–October). Pack a warm jacket for the evening! The Xocomil (local wind) comes almost every afternoon and makes the lake choppy — plan boat trips in the morning.
Safety
Atitlán is generally safe for tourists. There have been isolated incidents of robberies on the hiking trails between the villages (especially San Pedro–San Juan and San Marcos–Tzunuá) — check current conditions and avoid hiking alone. In the villages themselves, it is safe. At night in San Pedro: exercise normal big-city caution in the bar zone.
Achtung
Never swim alone in Lago de Atitlán! The lake has no shoreline reinforcement, the bottom drops steeply, and the Xocomil wind can suddenly arise. In some places, there are currents. Swim only in busy areas (e.g., piers of hotels and hostels) and inform someone.
