Río Dulce & Lago de Izabal

The Río Dulce connects the Lago de Izabal (Guatemala's largest lake) with the Caribbean Sea — a 36 km long waterway through tropical jungle, which is one of the most beautiful river journeys in Central America.

Highlights

  • Castillo de San Felipe: A 17th-century Spanish fortress at the entrance of the Río Dulce, built to protect against pirates. Small, but picturesquely located on the lakeshore. Entrance fee: about 20 GTQ.
  • Río Dulce Canyon: The river narrows into a dramatic canyon with limestone cliffs up to 100 meters high, overgrown with tropical vegetation. The boat ride through the canyon is the highlight of the route.
  • Hot Springs (Aguas Calientes): Hot sulfur springs bubble up on the banks of the Río Dulce — boats stop here, and you can take a hot bath directly in the river, surrounded by jungle.
  • Finca Paraíso: A waterfall of hot water plunging into a cool lagoon — a surreal experience. Accessible by boat + short hike from Río Dulce.
  • Ak' Tenamit: A community tourism project of the Q'eqchi'-Maya on the Río Dulce. Village visits, cocoa production, nature hikes — directly supporting the local community.

Practical Information

The place Río Dulce (Fronteras) is located at the bridge over the river and is the main hub. From here, boats depart for Livingston (1.5h, about 15€), and there are accommodations on the riverbank. Getting there: Bus from Guatemala City (5h, about 8€) or from Flores (4–5h).
