Semuc Champey — Guatemala's Natural Wonder

Semuc Champey is a 300-meter-long limestone bridge over the Río Cahabón, where a chain of turquoise pools has formed — natural infinity pools, nestled in dense jungle. The river disappears beneath it into a cave and reemerges at the other end. It is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of Guatemala and a place that looks unreal in photos — and even better in reality.

What You Can Experience

  • Swimming in the Pools: The turquoise limestone pools invite you to swim — crystal clear, warm (about 22°C), surrounded by jungle. Take your time, drift from pool to pool, and enjoy the silence.
  • Mirador (Viewpoint): A steep climb (30–45 min.) leads to the viewpoint high above Semuc Champey — the view of the turquoise pools in the green jungle is Guatemala's photo spot. Don't miss it!
  • Cave Tubing (K'anba Caves): With a candle on your head and an inner tube in your arm, you swim through the dark cave where the Río Cahabón flows — pure adventure and not for claustrophobics. About 1h, often included in tours from Lanquín.
  • Night Tour: Some lodges offer night tours where you can experience Semuc Champey under the starry sky. Magical, but not available everywhere.

💡 Tipp

The journey to Lanquín is long and bumpy — but it's absolutely worth it. Plan at least 2 nights in Lanquín: one day for Semuc Champey (pools + viewpoint + tubing), another for the surroundings or simply to relax in one of the jungle lodges. The hostels El Retiro and Zephyr Lodge are legendary among backpackers.
