Best Travel Time & Climate
Climate Overview
Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with four distinctly different seasons — unlike most tropical cities in Southeast Asia. Summers are hot and humid (up to 35°C and 99% humidity), winters are mild and dry (15–20°C). Spring is foggy, autumn is golden.
| Period | Temperature | Rainy Days | Special Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar–May | 20–28°C | 8–12/month | Spring, foggy, humid |
| Jun–Sep | 27–33°C | 12–17/month | Summer, hot, typhoon season |
| Oct–Nov | 22–28°C | 5–6/month | Autumn — BEST TRAVEL TIME |
| Dec–Feb | 14–20°C | 3–5/month | Winter, mild, dry |
Typhoons: Hong Kong is located in the typhoon belt. The typhoon season runs from June to October, with most storms occurring in August and September. At typhoon signal 8 (T8), the city comes to a standstill: shops close, public transport stops, flights are canceled. However, the city has a top-notch warning system, and buildings are built to withstand typhoons. Panic is unnecessary — respect is essential.
The Four Seasons
Autumn (October–November): The Best Travel Time
The perfect season for Hong Kong: clear, blue skies, pleasant temperatures (22–28°C), low humidity, and the best views of the skyline and from the mountains. Victoria Peak is at its best. Perfect for hiking (Dragon's Back!), island hopping, and outdoor experiences. Fewer tourists than in summer, fair prices.
Winter (December–February): Mild and Dry
Hong Kong's winter is mild (14–20°C) — cold for Hongkongers (who immediately bring out their down jackets), pleasant for Europeans. The air is clear, the views are fantastic, and the city is decorated for Christmas (Harbour City and Central are spectacular) and Chinese New Year (January/February — fireworks over the harbor, parades, flower markets). Off-season prices outside the holiday weeks.
Spring (March–May): Foggy and Humid
Spring brings fog and high humidity — Victoria Peak often disappears into the clouds, and visibility can be limited for days. Nevertheless, temperatures are pleasant (20–28°C), nature blooms, and there are fewer tourists. Not ideal for sightseeing, but good for food tours and cultural experiences.
Summer (June–September): Hot, Humid, Typhoons
Oppressive heat (27–33°C), extreme humidity (up to 99%), and regular downpours. Air conditioners are in full swing — the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors can be 15°C. Typhoon season: storms can disrupt plans. However: Sale season in the malls and dramatic cloud formations over the skyline. Recommended only for those who can handle the heat.
Tipp
The golden rule for Hong Kong: October and November are the perfect months — clear skies, pleasant temperatures, best visibility. December to February is also great for winter travelers (mild temperatures, dry air). Avoid June to September if you dislike heat and humidity.

|---|---|---|
| Victoria Peak | Oct–Feb | Clearest views in autumn/winter |
| Hiking (Dragon's Back) | Oct–Mar | Cooler temperatures |
| Star Ferry & Harbour | Oct–Feb | Best views of the skyline |
| Dim Sum | All year round | Always in season! |
| Chinese New Year | Jan/Feb | Fireworks, parades, flower markets |
| Night Markets | Oct–Mar | More pleasant temperatures in the evenings |
| Beach & Islands | Jun–Sep | Warm enough for swimming |
| Shopping Sales | Jul–Aug, Dec–Jan | Summer and winter sales |

Conclusion: Hong Kong is a year-round destination with clear favorites: October and November are unbeatable. Winter (December–February) is the second-best choice. In summer, it's better to head to other destinations in Southeast Asia — unless you like it tropical-hot and are into shopping sales.
