Society & Culture

Hong Kong is a city of contrasts — ultra-modern and deeply rooted in traditions, Western-influenced and profoundly Chinese, lightning-fast and marked by Confucian patience.

Speed and Efficiency

Hong Kongers walk fast — the escalators run faster than elsewhere, the MTR doors close in 3 seconds, and if you hesitate too long at the Dim Sum stand, you'll be skipped. This pace is not rudeness — it's a survival strategy in a city with 7.4 million people on 1,114 km². Adapt, keep up, don't get in the way.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui is not superstition in Hong Kong — it's a serious business matter. The Bank of China was criticized for its "hostile" sharp edges (it "cuts" the neighboring buildings), the HSBC Building has no fourth floor (4 = death in Cantonese), and no skyscraper is built without consulting a Feng Shui master. Many residential buildings lack floors 4, 14, 24, and 44.

Cantonese

Cantonese is the mother tongue of most Hong Kongers — a tonal language with nine tones (compared to Mandarin's four), which is difficult for Western ears to learn. English is an official language and is widely spoken in business, administration, and tourism — but in local restaurants, markets, and in Kowloon, it can be scarce. A few words of Cantonese are appreciated:

  • M Goi (唔該) — Thank you (for a service) / Excuse me / Please
  • Do Jeh (多謝) — Thank you (for a gift)
  • Nei Hou (你好) — Hello
  • Gei Do Chin? (幾多錢?) — How much does it cost?
  • Yam Bui! (飲杯!) — Cheers!

💡 Tipp

In Hong Kong, a lot is communicated with hand signals — especially in loud Cha Chaan Tengs and Dim Sum restaurants. The universal "thank you for the tea" gesture: tap twice with your fingertips on the table when someone pours you tea. A gesture that dates back to an imperial visit and is as natural in Hong Kong as breathing.
