The capital as the center of reggae culture and the spectacular Blue Mountains as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kingston
Kingston is the largest city in the English-speaking Caribbean and the musical heart of Jamaica — not your typical tourist city: urban, authentic, sometimes chaotic, but the place where reggae culture thrives.
- Bob Marley Museum (Hope Road 56) — the former residence of the reggae king, one of the best music museums in the Caribbean
- Trench Town Culture Yard — birthplace of reggae, home of the young Bob Marley, museum with authenticity
- National Gallery of Jamaica — the island's most important art collection
- Devon House — historic mansion, famous ice cream (Devon House I-Scream)
- Hope Botanical Gardens
- Port Royal — historic pirate harbor ("the wickedest city in the world" in the 17th century), partially sunk by the 1692 earthquake
Kingston should be visited with care: New Kingston and Half Way Tree are safe during the day; certain inner-city areas (e.g., Downtown, Trench Town outside guided tours) only with local accompaniment.
Achtung
Some parts of Kingston are considered unsafe, especially at night. Bob Marley Museum and Devon House are safe; Trench Town is best visited only with a guided tour provider.
Blue Mountains
The Blue and John Crow Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015) rise in eastern Jamaica up to the Blue Mountain Peak (2,256 m) — Jamaica's highest mountain.
- Blue Mountain Coffee — one of the most expensive and renowned coffees in the world, grows at 900-1,700 m. Tours available at estates like Craighton Coffee Estate
- Blue Mountain Peak Hike — classic sunrise hike: ascent from Whitfield Hall at 3 a.m. (5-6 hours up) to be at the top by sunrise. Clear days: view as far as Cuba
- Holywell National Park — entry point for day hikes, viewpoints
- Maroon Villages — the Blue Mountains were a refuge for escaped slaves (Maroons) in the 17th/18th centuries; descendants still live in autonomous communities today
Port Antonio
Port Antonio on the northeast coast is the quiet, alternative Jamaica — fewer tourists, more authenticity, discovered by Errol Flynn in the 1940s as a film star retreat.
- Frenchman's Cove — often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean
- Blue Lagoon — turquoise lagoon, famous from the film with Brooke Shields
- Reach Falls — natural waterfalls and pools in the rainforest
- Rio Grande Bamboo Rafting — drift along on a bamboo raft
- Boston Bay — birthplace of jerk culture, famous jerk stands on the beach
