Newfoundland — at the Edge of the World★★★

Newfoundland & Labrador

Newfoundland is the easternmost point of North America — St. John's, the capital, is closer to Ireland than to Vancouver. And that's exactly how the island feels: a mix of Irish soul, wild nature, and the feeling of standing at the edge of the known world. The culture is unique: its own accent (which sounds like a mix of Irish and pirate), its own music (Celtic folk), its own cuisine (Jiggs Dinner, Toutons, Screech Rum), and its own time zone (UTC -3:30 — the only half time zone in North America).

Top Highlights

  • Icebergs: From May to July, massive icebergs — fragments of Greenland glaciers — drift past the coast of Newfoundland. The "Iceberg Alley" between St. Anthony and Twillingate offers the best sightings. Some icebergs are as large as a building, some glow blue, all are surreal. Tours by boat from 65 CAD, often also visible for free from the shore.
  • St. John's: Canada's easternmost (and oldest) city — colorful row houses on the hillside (the famous "Jellybean Row"), the natural harbor The Narrows, Signal Hill (where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901), and George Street — the street with the most bars per square meter in all of North America. In the evening: "Screech-In" — a ritual where tourists drink Screech Rum and are declared "Honorary Newfoundlanders."
  • Gros Morne National Park: UNESCO World Heritage Site and geological wonder. The Tablelands — barren, orange mountains made of mantle rock pushed to the surface — look like another planet. The Western Brook Pond — a fjord lake surrounded by 600-meter-high cliffs, accessible by boat tour (65 CAD). One of Canada's most impressive national parks.
  • Cape Spear: The easternmost point of North America. A lighthouse, cliffs, the endless Atlantic. From here, the next land is Ireland — 3,200 km away. In spring: whales and icebergs directly from the mainland.
  • L'Anse aux Meadows: UNESCO World Heritage Site — the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America. Around the year 1000, Leif Erikson landed here, 500 years before Columbus. The reconstructed longhouses are fascinating.

💡 Tipp

Newfoundland has its own time zone: Newfoundland Standard Time (UTC -3:30). This means when it's 12:00 in Toronto, it's 13:30 in Newfoundland. Not 13:00 — 13:30. The half-hour confuses every visitor but is charmingly typical of this quirky island.

Achtung

Newfoundland is only accessible by ferry (6–14 hours!) or flight. Marine Atlantic operates from North Sydney (Nova Scotia) to Channel-Port aux Basques (6h) or Argentia (14h). In summer, be sure to book in advance — the ferries sell out quickly! Prices: from 45 CAD per person + 115 CAD per car.
