Montréal — Europe's Soul in North America

Montréal is the second-largest French-speaking city in the world (after Paris) and possibly Canada's most culturally exciting city. Here, French elegance meets North American energy, Victorian architecture meets street art, haute cuisine meets legendary junk food. The city has more restaurants per capita than any other Canadian city, nightlife that rages until 3 a.m. (bars close only then — an hour later than in Toronto!), and a festival density that is unmatched.

Montréal is officially bilingual, although French clearly dominates. Don't worry: In tourist areas, everyone speaks English. The beauty is the constant back-and-forth between the languages — a waiter greets you in French, seamlessly switches to English, and sprinkles in "Merci" and "C'est bon." This linguistic ease gives the city its unique charm.

Old Montréal (Vieux-Montréal)★★★

Vieux-Montréal, zwischen Rue Saint-Antoine und Sankt-Lorenz-Strom

Vieux-Montréal is the historic heart of the city — a labyrinth of cobblestone streets, French colonial architecture, and buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Montréal began here in 1642 as the mission post "Ville-Marie," and history is palpable at every corner.

The center is the Place d'Armes with the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal — and no, this is not just another church. The interior is one of the most breathtaking sacred spaces in North America: cobalt blue vaults with golden stars, over 7,000 carved wooden ornaments, and a light show called "Aura" (28 CAD) that combines music and projections in the nave in the evenings. Céline Dion got married here — which gives you an idea of the opulence.

The Rue Saint-Paul, Montréal's oldest street, is lined with galleries, boutiques, and bistros. At the Old Port (Vieux-Port), you can stroll along the Saint Lawrence River, ride the Ferris wheel at La Grande Roue (30 CAD) in the summer, and skate on the outdoor rink in the winter. The Montréal Science Centre at the harbor is ideal for families.

💡 Tipp

In the evening, Old Montréal is at its most atmospheric — the gas lamps are lit, the restaurant terraces fill up, and street musicians play jazz on Place Jacques-Cartier. Reserve a table at Olive + Gourmando (brunch) or Garde Manger (evenings).

Mile End & Plateau-Mont-Royal★★

Mile End: rund um Boulevard Saint-Laurent & Avenue Fairmount / Plateau: rund um Rue Saint-Denis

If Old Montréal is the past, then Mile End and Plateau-Mont-Royal are the present — the liveliest, most creative, and authentic neighborhoods in the city. Here lives the young, art-loving Montréal: musicians, graphic designers, students, and start-up founders in colorful row houses with the typical exterior staircases.

Mile End is famous for the Bagel War — two bakeries that have been competing for decades for the best bagel in Montréal (and thus the world, say the Montréalers): Fairmount Bagel (since 1919, open around the clock!) and St-Viateur Bagel (since 1957). Both bake in wood ovens, both are sensational, and both camps are irreconcilable. Our tip: Try both and decide for yourself. Montréal bagels are smaller, sweeter, and denser than New York bagels — boiled in honey water, then baked in a wood oven.

The Plateau-Mont-Royal is the heart of the Francophone bohemia: The Rue Saint-Denis and Boulevard Saint-Laurent (the historic boundary between the French east and the English west) are full of cafés, bars, independent bookstores, and vintage shops. The colorful houses with the characteristic exterior staircases (escaliers extérieurs) are Montréal's visual trademark.

💡 Tipp

Schwartz's Deli (since 1928) on Boulevard Saint-Laurent serves the legendary Montréal smoked meat — spice-marinated, smoked beef brisket sandwich, more addictive than any other sandwich on the continent. Always a line, always worth it. Order "medium fat" — that's the best cut.
