Lake Louise — The Turquoise Dream★★★

Lake Louise, Banff National Park, AB
Im Banff-Eintritt enthalten (10,50 CAD/Person)

Lake Louise is perhaps the most famous lake in the world — and when you stand on its shore for the first time and see the surreal turquoise fed by the Victoria Glacier, you'll understand why. The color is created by "glacial flour" — finely ground rock that refracts the light. No filter, no Photoshop can replicate what nature has done here.

On the eastern shore stands the legendary Fairmont Château Lake Louise — a luxury hotel built in 1890 in the style of a castle, whose windows frame a view of the lake like a living painting. Even if you don't stay here (rooms from 500 CAD/night), you can enjoy the lobby, afternoon tea, and the view from the terrace.

Hikes from Lake Louise

  • Lakeshore Trail: Flat and easy along the lakeshore (3.4 km one-way). Perfect for arriving and marveling.
  • Plain of Six Glaciers: 13.6 km, 365 meters elevation gain. At the end awaits a historic tea house (since 1927!) with views of six glaciers. One of the best hiking experiences in the Rockies.
  • Lake Agnes Tea House: 7.2 km, 400 meters elevation gain. To the second historic tea house (1905), accessible only on foot. Hot tea and scones at 2,100 meters.
  • Big Beehive: Extension of the Lake Agnes trail with breathtaking panoramic views from above Lake Louise — 10 km, 520 meters elevation gain.

Achtung

Lake Louise is a victim of its own fame: In July/August, the parking lot is often full by 7:00 AM. Parks Canada has introduced a shuttle system (reservation required!). Alternatively: Bus from Banff or arrive very early (before 6:30 AM).
