Safari Photography Tips

The Masai Mara is a dream destination for photographers — the golden light, the vast landscape, and the proximity to the animals offer world-class subjects. Here are the key tips:

📸 Equipment

  • Telephoto lens: 100–400mm is ideal, 200–600mm for shy animals and birds. A 70–200mm f/2.8 is the all-rounder
  • Wide-angle: For landscapes, sundowners, and vehicle perspectives. 16–35mm
  • Tripod? Useless in the vehicle — instead, take a beanbag to rest on the windowsill
  • Memory cards: At least 128 GB — you will take LOTS of photos
  • Dust! Bags and cleaning cloths for the equipment — the Mara is dusty

🌅 The Best Light

  • 6:00–8:00 AM: Golden morning light, active predators, mist over the savannah
  • 4:00–6:30 PM: Warm evening light, animals at waterholes, dramatic clouds
  • Midday sun: Harsh light, but perfect for black-and-white and silhouettes

💡 Pro Tips

  • Eye level is everything — ask the driver to get close and turn off the engine
  • Always focus on the eyes of the animal
  • Pay attention to the background: savannah is perfect, other vehicles ruin the picture
  • Photographing animals in behavior (hunting, drinking, playing) is more exciting than portraits
  • The migration is best photographed from the hills above the river crossings
