Visiting Masai Villages★★

The Masai (also Maasai) are Kenya's most famous ethnic group — semi-nomadic pastoralists who hold on to many traditions despite modernity. Their distinctive red Shúkà (blanket), elaborate beaded jewelry, and jumping dances (Adumu) have become symbols of Kenya.

Many Masai villages (Manyattas/Bomas) near the Mara offer cultural visits. What to expect:

  • Welcome dance: The warriors (Morans) take turns jumping as high as possible — the higher, the more impressive
  • Making fire: Demonstration of the traditional method with rubbing wood
  • Village tour: The Bomas (huts) are built from cow dung, clay, and branches — surprisingly stable and cool inside
  • Buying beadwork: Directly from the women who handcraft each piece
  • Visiting a school: Many villages have their own schools, some funded by safari tourism revenues

The visit usually costs 20–30 USD per person, with the money going to the community. Not all visits are equally authentic — book through your lodge and ask about community partnerships.

💡 Tipp

The best Masai experiences are offered by the conservancies, where Masai communities are directly involved in safari revenues. Here, encounters are more authentic than in the heavily touristic villages at the main gate.
