Slow Boat, Buses & Tuk-Tuks
Slow Boat on the Mekong
The legendary Slow-Boat journey from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang is one of Southeast Asia's great travel experiences. Two days on the mighty Mekong, passing jungle mountains, buffalo herds, and tiny fishing villages:
- Day 1: Huay Xai → Pak Beng (approx. 7h). Departure around 11:00. Overnight in Pak Beng.
- Day 2: Pak Beng → Luang Prabang (approx. 7h). Departure around 9:00. Arrival in the late afternoon.
- Price: approx. 250,000 LAK (10 EUR) for the basic boat, bring a cushion and blanket!
- Comfort: Wooden benches (hard!), no food on board (stock up in Pak Beng). Toilet available (basic).
There are also Speedboats (6h instead of 2 days, 300,000 LAK), but they are noisy, uncomfortable, and dangerous. The Slow Boat is the experience — take your time!
VIP Buses
The overland bus network connects all major cities. The quality varies greatly:
| Route | Duration | Price | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vientiane → Luang Prabang (VIP Bus) | 9–11h | 150,000–200,000 LAK | Mountain roads with hairpin bends — travel sickness pills! |
| Vientiane → Vang Vieng | 3–4h | 50,000–80,000 LAK | Good road |
| Luang Prabang → Nong Khiaw | 3–4h | 50,000 LAK | Spectacular mountain road |
| Luang Prabang → Phonsavan | 6–8h | 110,000 LAK | Winding, bumpy |
| Vientiane → Pakse | 8–10h | 150,000–180,000 LAK | VIP night bus available |
| Pakse → 4000 Islands | 2–3h | 50,000–65,000 LAK | Incl. boat transfer to Don Det |
Tuk-Tuks & Sǎwngthǎew
Tuk-Tuks (motorized tricycles) are the standard mode of transport in the cities. In the countryside, Sǎwngthǎew — converted pick-up trucks with benches on the loading area — are used. Always negotiate the price beforehand!
- Short Tuk-Tuk ride in the city: 20,000–30,000 LAK
- Kuang Si Waterfall from Luang Prabang (Tuk-Tuk, return): 200,000–250,000 LAK
- Sǎwngthǎew (Shared): from 20,000 LAK depending on the route
Achtung
Bus rides in Laos are notorious. The mountain roads in the north are winding, often unpaved, and the driving style is... ambitious. Bring travel sickness pills! The Vientiane → Luang Prabang route by bus takes 10+ hours on hairpin bends — the new railway (2h) or a flight (40 min) are the better choices unless you're seeking adventure.
