West End & Musicals

London's West End is, alongside New York's Broadway, the most significant theater district in the world. Within a radius of a few hundred meters around Leicester Square and Shaftesbury Avenue, there are over 40 theaters that show performances every evening — from mega-musicals to Shakespeare to experimental theater.

The Classics

  • Les Misérables: In the West End since 1985 — the longest-running musical. Victor Hugo's epic about revolution, love, and redemption. At the Queens Theatre.
  • The Phantom of the Opera: Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece ran for 37 years in the West End (until 2023). Check if a new production is running.
  • The Lion King: Disney's masterpiece with breathtaking puppets and costumes. At the Lyceum Theatre since 1999.
  • Hamilton: Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton. At the Victoria Palace Theatre.
  • Wicked: The backstory of "The Wizard of Oz" — in the Apollo Victoria since 2006. Especially sought after following the film (2024).

Getting Cheap Tickets

  • TKTS Leicester Square: The official last-minute ticket booth — up to 50% off on same-day performances. Opens at 10 am, best selection in the morning.
  • Day Seats / Rush Tickets: Many theaters sell a limited number of cheap tickets (from £10–20) in the morning for the same evening's performance. Lining up is worth it!
  • TodayTix App: Last-minute tickets and lottery (raffle for cheap tickets) for many shows.
  • Standing Tickets: Some theaters offer standing places from £5 — the Shakespeare's Globe Groundlings (£5) are the best theater deal in London.

💡 Tipp

Do not book musicals through third-party vendors on the street (especially at Leicester Square, there are ticket touts selling overpriced or fake tickets). Only buy from TKTS, official theater websites, or TodayTix. Matinee performances (afternoon, Wed/Sat) are often cheaper than evening shows.
