The Two Seasons
Dry Season / Winter (May–October): The Best Travel Time
The peak travel season for Madagascar. Temperatures are pleasant, roads are passable, and lemurs are easily visible (less foliage). In the highlands, it can get quite chilly at night (5–10°C), while during the day, it's ideal for hiking at 20–25°C. The Tsingy de Bemaraha is only accessible during the dry season. July to September are the peak months — especially because of the humpback whales off the east coast.
Rainy Season / Summer (November–April): For Specialists
The "green season" has its own charm: lush vegetation, reptile weddings (chameleons!), cheaper prices, and fewer tourists. However: Roads turn into mudflats, many national parks are difficult or impossible to access (Tsingy de Bemaraha closed!), and from January to March, tropical cyclones threaten. Those traveling during the rainy season need flexibility, patience, and a good 4x4.
Transition Period (April/May & October/November)
The months of April/May (end of the rainy season) and October/November (beginning) are excellent travel times: fewer tourists than in midsummer, nature in full bloom, and mostly passable roads. Especially October is a hidden gem — the jacaranda trees bloom violet in Tana.
💡 Tipp
The absolute best time for a round trip is September to November: The dry season ends, nature awakens, the whales are still there, and prices are cheaper than in July/August. For a beach holiday on Nosy Be, May to October is perfect.
