Dhigurah — Whale Shark Capital★★★
Dhigurah is a narrow, 3 km long strip of white sand in the South Ari Atoll — and the best address in the world for budget whale shark encounters. While the surrounding resorts charge $150 per tour, whale shark excursions from Dhigurah cost only $60–80 — and the sighting rate is identical because everyone goes to the same reef.
Whale Shark Tours
Every morning around 8:00 am, the Dhonis depart from the harbor and travel 15–30 minutes to the edge of the South Ari Marine Protected Area. The crew looks out for the dark shadows beneath the surface, and once a whale shark is spotted, a maximum of 10 snorkelers gently slide into the water. The animals are accustomed to humans and swim leisurely onward — you drift alongside a giant up to 10 meters long, covered in white spots, through crystal-clear water. The tour lasts 3–4 hours and includes 2–3 whale shark encounters as well as snorkeling stops at the reef.
Best Providers: Dhigurah Dive Center, Whale Shark Research Programme (scientific tours that simultaneously collect data), Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP). Coordinates: [3.5297, 72.9286].

More Than Whale Sharks
Dhigurah has a 3 km long beach, which is among the most beautiful beaches in the Maldives — and you have it almost to yourself. At Bikini Beach in the south of the island, there are rarely more than 10 people. In the evenings, small blacktip reef sharks regularly come to the shore (no danger, but spectacular), and with luck, you might see bioluminescence — the water glows neon blue when moved.
💡 Tipp
Stay at least 3 nights — the island rhythm takes a day to settle in, and with a 90% sighting rate, you're guaranteed your whale shark experience. Arrival: Domestic flight to Maamigili (30 min., from $120) + 10 min. speedboat, or directly by speedboat from Malé (3h, $40).
Achtung
Dhigurah is a conservative local island. Alcohol is strictly prohibited, the Bikini Beach is clearly marked and small. Avoid walking through the village in swimwear — it is considered very disrespectful. Evenings are quiet: no nightlife, no bars. Instead: starry skies over the Indian Ocean.
