Welcome to the Maldives
A paradise of 1,196 islands
The Maldives are what happens when someone scatters 1,196 coral islands like pearls over the Indian Ocean — strung together in 26 natural atolls that stretch 871 kilometers from north to south. Only 187 islands are inhabited, another 160 each host a single resort. The rest? Untouched sand spots surrounded by turquoise water so clear you can see the coral on the seabed from the boat.
The Maldives are the flattest country on earth — the highest natural point is only 2.4 meters above sea level. This fragility makes the archipelago the poster child of climate change but also gives it its unique beauty: endless lagoons in impossible shades of blue, house reefs starting right in front of the water villa, and sunsets where the horizon in all directions consists only of water.
Since the first resort opened on Kurumba in 1972, the Maldives have been synonymous with luxury vacations. Overwater villas with glass floors, private butlers, underwater restaurants — here opulence is taken to the extreme. But since around 2010, a second Maldives world has developed: Guesthouses on local islands, making paradise accessible for a fraction of the price. 60 € instead of 600 € per night — and the ocean is the same.
Resort vs. Local Island — The Crucial Question
| Criterion | Resort Island | Local Island |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Overwater villa, beach villa | Guesthouse, small hotel |
| Price/Night | 300–3,000 € (All-Inclusive often 500+) | 40–120 € |
| Alcohol | Freely available (resort license) | Not available (Islamic law) |
| Bikini | Everywhere on the island | Only at "Bikini Beach" |
| Food | Buffets, fine dining, bars | Local restaurants, guesthouse kitchen |
| Experience | Secluded luxury bubble | Insight into Maldivian culture |
| Snorkeling | House reef right in front of the villa | By boat trip (15–30 €) |
Tipp
The perfect combination: Start with 3–4 nights on a local island (Maafushi or Dhigurah) to experience the culture and snorkel cheaply, then switch to a resort for 2–3 nights for the ultimate luxury. This way, you get both sides of the Maldives.
Top 10 Experiences
The Maldives offer far more than just beach and sunshine. These ten experiences make a trip here unforgettable:
- Swim with whale sharks at South Ari Atoll — The gentle giants of the sea can be found here year-round. Dhigurah is the whale shark capital of the world — sighting rate over 90%. Trip from 60–80 $ per person. → Chap. South Atolls
- Overwater villa at sunset — Watch the ocean glow beneath you from the private terrace of your water villa as the sun sets in the Indian Ocean. The iconic Maldives experience. → Chap. North Atolls
- Manta feeding in Hanifaru Bay — Hundreds of manta rays gather between June and November in this UNESCO-protected bay in the Baa Atoll for a plankton feast. An underwater spectacle like no other. → Chap. North Atolls
- Night diving with nurse sharks — In the light of the flashlight, nurse sharks, rays, and fluorescent corals glide through the darkness. Especially impressive at Alimathaa Jetty (Vaavu Atoll). → Chap. South Atolls
- Sandbank picnic on an uninhabited island — Your boat captain takes you to a tiny sandbank in the middle of the ocean, sets up a sunshade, and leaves you alone in paradise for hours. From 30 $ per person. → Chap. Local Islands
- Fish market in Malé — The chaotic, colorful fish market of the capital shows the soul of Maldivian culture: tuna, barracuda, grouper — freshly caught, loudly negotiated, filleted in minutes. → Chap. Malé
- Dolphin cruise at sunset — Spinner dolphins hunt in large schools through the atolls. A sunset cruise with dolphin watching is a must. From 25 $ per person. → Chap. Local Islands
- Bioluminescent beach — On some beaches, the water glows neon blue at night: tiny plankton organisms create an unreal glow with every movement. Best seen on Vaadhoo and Rangali in the South Ari Atoll, especially on moonless nights. → Chap. South Atolls
- Surfing on Thulusdhoo — The Maldives are a secret surfing paradise. The "Cokes" break off Thulusdhoo offers perfect rights over the reef. Season: March to October. → Chap. Local Islands
- Underwater restaurant at Conrad Rangali — Ithaa Undersea Restaurant is located 5 meters below the surface, surrounded by an acrylic tunnel with a 180-degree panorama of the coral reef. Lunch from 150 $. → Chap. South Atolls
Best Travel Time & Climate
The Maldives have a tropical monsoon climate with two main seasons. The water temperature is 27–30 °C year-round — bathtub temperature is the norm here.
The two monsoon seasons
- Northeast Monsoon (Iruvai) — November to April: The dry season and best travel time. Blue skies, little rain, excellent visibility for diving and snorkeling (up to 40 meters). December to March is peak season — prices rise by 30–100%, resorts are fully booked.
- Southwest Monsoon (Hulhangu) — May to October: The rainy season. More clouds, more frequent rain (often short, heavy showers), stronger swells. But: Greener islands, dramatic cloud formations, 30–50% cheaper prices, fewer tourists, and the best time for manta sightings (Hanifaru Bay, June–November). Surfers prefer this season.

Tipp
The off-season (May–October) is the insider tip for budget travelers. The rain showers rarely last longer than an hour, and then the sun returns. Many resorts offer "Stay 5 Pay 3" deals during this time — luxury at half the price.
Achtung
In the peak season (Christmas to New Year), many resorts require a minimum stay of 7–10 nights and charge surcharges of 50–100%. Those who are flexible should book in early January or late November — similar good weather, significantly lower prices.
Costs & Budget
The Maldives have a reputation for being prohibitively expensive — and yes, a resort can blow the budget. But since the opening of local islands to tourists (2009), the Maldives are also affordable for average earners.
Daily budget per person
| Style | $/Day | €/Day | Accommodation | Food |

| Luxury | 500–1,500 | 450–1,350 | 5★ overwater villa | All-inclusive resort |
| Ultra-luxury | 1,500+ | 1,350+ | Private island villa | Private butler & chef |

| Water (1.5 l) | 1 $ | 5–8 $ |

| Speedboat transfer (airport) | 25–40 $/person | Included in price or 150–400 $ |
Hidden Costs
- Green Tax: 6 $ per person/night (in resorts and guesthouses, charged additionally)
- Service Charge: 10% on all resort bills, plus 16% GST (Goods & Services Tax)
- Seaplane Transfer: 300–600 $ per person (round trip) for remote resorts — often the largest single item!
- Excursions in the resort: Snorkeling, diving, sunset cruise — all extras that add up
Tipp
All-inclusive packages in resorts sound expensive, but they almost always pay off. Those who eat and drink à la carte can quickly spend $200–300 per day just on food and drinks in a 5-star resort. All-inclusive eliminates surprises.

The best savings tips
- Travel in the off-season (May–October): Resorts lower prices by 30–50%, flights are cheaper, and the manta season begins. The weather is not bad — just different.
- Use public ferries: Instead of speedboats (25–40 $), take the state ferry (2–4 $). Takes longer, but saves a lot. Schedule: mtcc.com.mv. Not on Fridays!
- Domestic flight instead of seaplane: For southern atolls, a domestic flight (150–200 $) is often cheaper than a seaplane (300–500 $) — and flies even after dark.
- Book guesthouse with half-board: Breakfast + dinner at the guesthouse is almost always cheaper than eating à la carte.
- Don't buy water in the resort: 1.5 liters of water cost 5–8 $ in the resort, 0.50 $ in the local shop. Fill your own bottle in resorts (many offer this).
- Book excursions through local providers: Resorts charge 50–100% more for identical excursions. Book directly on local islands, ask the concierge on resort islands.
- Early booking discounts: Resorts offer the best prices 6–12 months in advance, especially for the high season. Last-minute doesn't work well in the Maldives.
- Combine Maldives with Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka is cheaper and culturally fascinating. 1 week Sri Lanka + 1 week Maldives is the perfect combo. Colombo → Malé: 1h flight, from 100 $.
When to book? Timing & Planning
The right booking strategy can save thousands of euros in the Maldives:
Optimal Booking Time
| Travel Period | Book From | Last-Minute? | Price Trend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas/New Year | 9–12 months in advance | Impossible — fully booked | Highest prices (+100%) |
| Peak Season (Jan–Mar) | 6–9 months in advance | Rare, and expensive | High (+30–50%) |
| Shoulder (Nov, Apr) | 3–6 months in advance | Possible | Normal |
| Off-Season (May–Oct) | 2–4 months in advance | Very possible, good deals | Low (−30–50%) |
How long to stay?
- 5 days: Minimum for a resort stay. Just enough for relaxation, snorkeling, and 1–2 excursions.
- 7 days: The classic. Enough time for a resort OR island hopping over 2–3 local islands.
- 10 days: Ideal for the combination of local islands + resort. The recommended travel duration.
- 14 days: For divers, island hoppers, and those who really want to arrive. Experience 4–5 different islands.
Family Planning
Maldives with children are doable, but there are a few things to consider:
- Resorts with children's programs: Anantara Dhigu, Centara Grand, Kurumba, Bandos — all with kids club and family-friendly activities
- Age: Most resorts accept children from 0 years. Some adults-only resorts (Hurawalhi, Komandoo) exclude children
- Local islands with children: Works well! Children are warmly welcomed in the Maldives. Maafushi and Guraidhoo are family-friendly
- Snorkeling with children: Good from 5–6 years old. Many resorts offer children's snorkeling courses. Life jackets are available everywhere
- Sun protection: At the equator, UV radiation is brutal. Children need SPF 50+, UV shirt, hat, and sunglasses — no compromises
Tipp
The best booking strategy for bargain hunters: Monitor flights via price comparison sites like Skyscanner or Google Flights (set a price alert), book resorts directly through the hotel website (often 10–15% cheaper than through portals), and contact local guesthouses via email or WhatsApp (more flexible prices than on portals).
