Fulidhoo — The Hidden Gem★★

Fulidhoo, Vaavu Atoll
Guesthouse ab 25 $/Nacht

Fulidhoo in the Vaavu Atoll answers the question: "What did the Maldives look like before tourism?" This tiny island (only 600 inhabitants) has so far slept through mass tourism — and that's exactly what makes it the perfect destination for travelers who find Maafushi too touristy.

Fulidhoo's Bikini Beach is a dream: wide, white sand, turquoise water, and on an average day, you share it with maybe five other tourists. In the afternoon, manta rays regularly glide through the lagoon — visible from the beach! The underwater world right at the house reef is excellent: turtles, clownfish, parrotfish, and with a bit of luck, nurse sharks on the sandy bottom.

The island has only 5–6 guesthouses ($25–60/night), 2 small restaurants, and not a single souvenir shop. Village life is visible and accessible: children play on the dusty main street, fishermen mend their nets, and in the only café (Hotaa), men sit having tea and discussing. This unadulterated authentic experience has long been lost on Maafushi.

Excursions from Fulidhoo

  • Snorkel Safari: $30–40/person, outstanding reefs in the Vaavu Atoll with sharks and rays
  • Night Dive Alimathaa: $50–60, the famous nurse shark spot is located right in the same atoll
  • Sandbank Picnic: $25/person on a private sandbank

Diving from Fulidhoo — Access to the Vaavu Atoll

The Vaavu Atoll is known among experienced divers as one of the best diving areas in the Maldives — and Fulidhoo is right in the middle of it. The dive school Fulidhoo Dive offers guided dives to world-class spots:

  • Fotteyo Kandu: Often referred to as the best dive site in the Maldives — a channel with overhangs full of soft corals, gorgonians, and sponges. Gray reef sharks patrol the entrance, Napoleon wrasses float in the current, and occasionally hammerhead sharks appear in the blue water. 2 dives from $90. Requires Advanced certification and drift experience.
  • Alimathaa Jetty: The legendary night dive spot where dozens of nurse sharks and stingrays gather under an old boat dock — attracted by the light and fish scraps. Night diving here is like visiting the sharks' living room: The 2–3 meter long nurse sharks are stacked on the sandy bottom, while rays glide majestically over the divers. Also bookable as a snorkeling version ($40).
  • Miyaru Kandu: "Shark Channel" in Dhivehi — and the name delivers what it promises. Drift dive through a narrow channel where gray sharks, whitetip sharks, and huge schools of bigeye trevally congregate.

Prices: Single dive from $55, 5-dive package from $240, 10-dive package from $430. PADI Open Water course from $380.

Arrival: Public ferry from Malé (3.5 hours, $3, runs Sundays and Thursdays) or speedboat (90 min., $35). Coordinates: [3.6619, 73.4333].

💡 Tipp

Fulidhoo is perfect for solo travelers and couples seeking true tranquility. The guesthouse owners are incredibly hospitable and will cook Maldivian home-cooked meals upon request. Ask for "Mas Huni for breakfast" — a tuna-coconut mix with Roshi flatbread, the most authentic breakfast in the Maldives.
