Guraidhoo — Surf & Snorkel★★
Guraidhoo in the South Malé Atoll is only 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport and offers an attractive mix of accessibility and authenticity. The island has about 2,000 inhabitants, around 15 guesthouses, and one of the best surf breaks in the region right off the coast.
Highlights
- Guraidhoo Corner: The famous dive site where gray reef sharks, eagle rays, and big fish gather. Also accessible as a snorkeling spot when the current is right.
- Surfbreak "Guru's": A consistent right that works with southwest swell between March and October. Less known than Cokes (Thulusdhoo), but less crowded.
- Bikini Beach: Well-maintained with clear water and sun loungers. Some guesthouses are located directly on the beach section.
Accommodations & Prices
| Guesthouse | Price/Night | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday Ocean View | $40–70 | Directly on Bikini Beach, rooftop restaurant |
| Hiyaa Guest House | $30–50 | Budget option, friendly family |
| Seaview Lodge | $50–90 | Upscale guesthouse, organizes all tours |
The advantage of Guraidhoo over Maafushi: fewer tourists, more authentic village life, cheaper prices — and the proximity to the airport saves transfer costs. The public ferry from Malé costs only $2 (travel time 2.5 hours, not on Fridays).
Tip for Budget Travelers: Island Hopping Route
The perfect budget route across local islands in 10 days:
- Night 1: Hulhumalé (arrival)
- Nights 2–4: Maafushi (snorkeling, dolphins, sandbank)
- Nights 5–7: Dhigurah (whale sharks, long beach)
- Nights 8–9: Fulidhoo or Guraidhoo (tranquility, local life)
- Night 10: Hulhumalé (departure day)
Total cost: approx. €60–80/day per person including accommodation, food, and daily excursions. For two weeks in the Maldives, that's under €1,500 (excluding flight). This definitively debunks the myth that the Maldives is only for the rich.
💡 Tipp
Speedboat transfers between local islands cost $25–40 per person and can be booked through the guesthouses. Cheaper: the public ferries ($2–4), which run only 2–3 times a week and not on Fridays. Plan the ferry schedule in advance (mtcc.com.mv).
