Maafushi — The Budget Capital★★★
Maafushi is the most visited local island in the Maldives and the epicenter of budget tourism. The small island in the South Malé Atoll (only 1.2 km long and 260 m wide) has transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a bustling tourist center — with over 80 guesthouses, dozens of restaurants, dive schools, and tour providers. Coordinates: [3.9419, 73.4908].
Arrival
- Speedboat: 35 minutes from the airport, $25–35 per person. Multiple daily departures.
- Public Ferry: From Villingili Terminal (Malé), 90 minutes, only $2–3 per person. Runs daily except Fridays (rest day). Departure 15:00, return 7:30.
Accommodations
The selection is vast — from simple rooms with a fan to air-conditioned boutique guesthouses with rooftop pools:
| Category | Price/Night | Amenities | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | $30–50 | AC, shower, breakfast | Crystal Sands, Stingray Beach Inn |

Bikini Beach
As an Islamic country, the Maldives has strict dress codes — on local islands, you can only wear Western swimwear at the designated "Bikini Beach". In Maafushi, the Bikini Beach is the northern beach section — separated by a fence from the "local beach," where locals swim fully clothed. The Bikini Beach is clean, has turquoise water and sun loungers, and guesthouses often provide towels and drinks directly there.

💡 Tipp
Fridays are quieter on Maafushi — many excursions are canceled as it is the Islamic day of rest. Use the day for Bikini Beach and relaxation. Most tours are available on Saturdays and Sundays.
Achtung
Outside of Bikini Beach, it is disrespectful and legally prohibited to wear swimwear. When walking through the village: cover shoulders and knees. The same dress code applies in restaurants and shops. Alcohol is prohibited on all local islands — even in guesthouses.
