When to book? Timing & Planning
The right booking strategy can save thousands of euros in the Maldives:
Optimal Booking Time
| Travel Period | Book From | Last-Minute? | Price Trend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas/New Year | 9–12 months in advance | Impossible — fully booked | Highest prices (+100%) |
| Peak Season (Jan–Mar) | 6–9 months in advance | Rare, and expensive | High (+30–50%) |
| Shoulder (Nov, Apr) | 3–6 months in advance | Possible | Normal |
| Off-Season (May–Oct) | 2–4 months in advance | Very possible, good deals | Low (−30–50%) |
How long to stay?
- 5 days: Minimum for a resort stay. Just enough for relaxation, snorkeling, and 1–2 excursions.
- 7 days: The classic. Enough time for a resort OR island hopping over 2–3 local islands.
- 10 days: Ideal for the combination of local islands + resort. The recommended travel duration.
- 14 days: For divers, island hoppers, and those who really want to arrive. Experience 4–5 different islands.
Family Planning
Maldives with children are doable, but there are a few things to consider:
- Resorts with children's programs: Anantara Dhigu, Centara Grand, Kurumba, Bandos — all with kids club and family-friendly activities
- Age: Most resorts accept children from 0 years. Some adults-only resorts (Hurawalhi, Komandoo) exclude children
- Local islands with children: Works well! Children are warmly welcomed in the Maldives. Maafushi and Guraidhoo are family-friendly
- Snorkeling with children: Good from 5–6 years old. Many resorts offer children's snorkeling courses. Life jackets are available everywhere
- Sun protection: At the equator, UV radiation is brutal. Children need SPF 50+, UV shirt, hat, and sunglasses — no compromises
💡 Tipp
The best booking strategy for bargain hunters: Monitor flights via price comparison sites like Skyscanner or Google Flights (set a price alert), book resorts directly through the hotel website (often 10–15% cheaper than through portals), and contact local guesthouses via email or WhatsApp (more flexible prices than on portals).
