What does Mauritius cost?
Mauritius is significantly cheaper than its reputation — provided you occasionally leave the resort. Hotel prices are international, but food, transport, and activities are surprisingly affordable. The currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR), 1 Euro ≈ 48–50 MUR.

Budget Levels
Backpacker / Budget (30–60€ per day)
Mauritius on a small budget — it's possible! Stay in Chambres d'hôtes (guesthouses from 25€), eat street food (Dholl Puri, Gâteau Piment for under 1€!), travel by public buses (under 1€ per ride, across the island), and use the public beaches. Many of the most beautiful experiences — beaches, hiking in Black River Gorges, visiting the central market — are free. Self-caterers will find affordable tropical fruits and local products in supermarkets (Super U, Jumbo, Winners).
Mid-range (80–150€ per day)
A comfortable boutique hotel or Airbnb (50–100€), a mix of street food and restaurant visits, a rental car (25–50€/day) for maximum flexibility, and one to two organized activities (catamaran tour, snorkeling, rum tasting). The best balance between comfort and budget — this way you experience the island in all its diversity.
Luxury / Honeymoon (250–800€+ per day)
Mauritius shines in the luxury segment: World-class resorts like One&Only Le Saint Géran, Shangri-La Le Touessrok, or LUX* Grand Baie offer all-inclusive at the highest level. Private villas with pools, spa treatments, gourmet dinners on the beach, helicopter transfers, and private boat tours. Mauritius is one of the top destinations worldwide for honeymoons — and the quality justifies the price.
Tipp
The biggest saving hack in Mauritius: Street food! Dholl Puri (Indian flatbreads with lentil filling) cost 15–30 MUR (under 0.60€) and are incredibly delicious. You'll find "Roulotte" stands and food stalls on every corner. The food is fresh, safe, and authentic — the Mauritians themselves eat there.
Saving Tips
Mauritius can be surprisingly affordable if you know a few tricks:
- Use public buses: The bus network covers the entire island. A ride costs 15–70 MUR (0.30–1.40€). Slow, but reliable and unbeatable in price. Express buses connect the main cities.
- Chambres d'hôtes instead of hotels: Mauritian guesthouses cost 20–50€ per night and often include breakfast and tips from locals. Many are located right on the beach.
- Local restaurants (Table d'hôte): Mauritian families offer lunch and dinner in their homes — homemade Creole cuisine for 5–10€ per person. Ask your guesthouse for recommendations.
- Public beaches: All beaches in Mauritius are publicly accessible (by law!). You can lie on the beach even in front of luxury resorts — no need to book a hotel.
- Self-driving instead of organized tours: A rental car costs from 25€/day — cheaper than organized full-day tours (60–100€). The island is small, and driving on the left is quickly learned.
- Market instead of supermarket: The central market in Port Louis and the weekly markets (Flacq, Quatre Bornes, Mahébourg) offer fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices at a fraction of supermarket prices.
- Early booking & off-season: Hotels are cheapest in May, June, September, and October — up to 40% below high season prices. Early booking discounts of 20–30% are common.
- Rum instead of cocktails: Mauritian rum (Chamarel, New Grove, Labourdonnais) is excellent and available in supermarkets for 10–20€ per bottle. Cocktails in restaurants cost three times as much.
