Rental Cars & Self-Driving
Namibia is the ultimate self-driving country. A rental car — ideally a 4×4 — is the best and most popular way to explore the country. The roads are well-marked, traffic is minimal, and the scenery is breathtaking.
What Vehicle Do You Need?
- 2WD (Sedan/SUV): Sufficient for main roads (B-roads) and some gravel roads (C-roads). Not recommended for Sossusvlei (last 5 km 4×4-only), Kaokoland, or Damaraland off the main routes
- 4×4 (recommended!): The best choice for Namibia. Necessary for Sossusvlei (final section), Etosha in the rain, Kaokoland, and many of the most beautiful side routes. A 4×4 with increased ground clearance provides security on gravel roads
- 4×4 with Roof Tent: The classic Namibia option! Complete camping equipment (fridge, cookware, table, chairs) included. Maximum freedom
Important Rental Companies
- Asco Car Hire — Namibia's largest local rental company, excellent service, office directly at the airport
- Britz Namibia — Specialist in 4×4 with roof tent, very well-equipped vehicles
- Caprivi Car Hire — Good value for money, local provider
- Avis/Hertz/Europcar — International brands at the airport, often more expensive
Road Types in Namibia
| Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| B-roads | Paved roads, well-developed | B1 Windhoek–Etosha, B2 Windhoek–Swakopmund |
| C-roads | Wide gravel roads, mostly easy to drive | C28 to Sossusvlei |
| D-roads | Narrow farm tracks, sometimes sandy or rocky | D-tracks in Kaokoland |
| Salt/Sand Tracks | Unpaved, often 4×4 only | Skeleton Coast, Sossusvlei final section |
Achtung
Speed on gravel roads: Maximum 80 km/h, better 60–70 km/h! The most common cause of accidents in Namibia is rollovers on gravel roads due to excessive speed. Corrugated sections tempt you to drive faster — don't do it.
