Tivoli — Emperor's Villa & Renaissance Gardens

Tivoli is located 30 km east of Rome in the Sabine Hills and hosts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are among the most impressive in Italy. A day trip to Tivoli is one of the most rewarding excursions from Rome — and significantly less crowded than the sights in the city center.

Villa d'Este — The 500 Fountains

The Villa d'Este (1560–1572) is the most spectacular Renaissance garden in the world: 500 fountains, water features, cascades, and grottoes, spread over a steep hillside overlooking the Campanian Plain. Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este designed the garden as an "earthly paradise" — and it remains so to this day. The Fontana dell'Organo (Organ Fountain) actually plays music, powered solely by water pressure.

Admission: 10€. Opening hours: Tue–Sun 8:30–19:30 (summer), shorter in winter. Closed on Mondays. Most beautiful in the late afternoon light.

Villa Adriana — The Emperor's Summer Residence

Emperor Hadrian (the builder of the Pantheon) began constructing a summer residence from 118 AD that surpassed everything: 120 hectares with replicas of the empire's most beautiful buildings — an Egyptian canal (Canopus), a Greek theater, a maritime theater (a private island surrounded by water), baths, libraries, and gardens. The Villa Adriana was the largest and most luxurious residence of the Roman Empire — and its ruins remain impressive to this day.

Admission: 10€. The site is extensive — plan for 2–3 hours. Bring sun protection!

Getting There

By regional train (Trenitalia) from Roma Tiburtina to Tivoli: 45 min., approx. 3€. From Tivoli station to Villa d'Este: 10 min. on foot. To Villa Adriana: Bus CAT 4 (20 min.) or taxi (10€).

💡 Tipp

Combine both villas in one day: Morning at Villa Adriana (fewer tourists, still some shade), lunch in Tivoli (the restaurants at Piazza Rivarola are good and affordable), afternoon at Villa d'Este. Take the first train from Roma Tiburtina.
