Entry & Visa

EU Citizens

Romania has been an EU member since 2007. As an EU citizen, you do not need a visa. A valid ID card or passport is sufficient. Romania joined the Schengen Area in March 2024 (initially for air and sea borders) — border controls at land borders may still occur.

Stay: Unlimited for EU citizens. For stays over 3 months: Registration with the immigration authority is required.

Swiss Citizens

Same rules as EU citizens. Passport or ID is sufficient.

Currency & Money

Romania's currency is the Romanian Leu (RON), plural Lei. 1 Euro ≈ 5 RON (relatively stable). Cash is still important in rural areas — in cities, you can pay almost everywhere by card. ATMs (Bancomat) are available everywhere, even in small towns. Note: Some ATMs offer "dynamic currency conversion" — always withdraw in RON, never in Euro (worse rate). Exchange offices (Casa de Schimb) in the city offer better rates than at the airport.
