Constanța & the Coast

Constanța (Konstanza) is Romania's largest port city with 280,000 inhabitants and boasts a 2,600-year history. Founded as the Greek colony Tomis (7th century BC), it was the place of exile for the Roman poet Ovid — his statue still stands in the main square. The city has archaeological treasures, a charming yet somewhat dilapidated old town, and serves as a gateway to the Black Sea coast.

Sights in Constanța

  • Archaeological Museum — One of Romania's best collections of antiquities: Greek vases, Roman mosaics, and the famous snake goddess Glykon — a unique marble statue with a lion's head and snake's body. Admission: 20 RON.
  • Casino Constanța — The Art Nouveau casino (1910) on the promenade is Romania's most iconic building: an elegant ruin right by the sea, currently undergoing extensive restoration. Stunning from the outside, inside (when open) a masterpiece of Art Nouveau.
  • Great Mosque (Moscheea Carol I) — Built by King Carol I in 1910: An eclectic mix of Moorish and Ottoman style with a minaret offering panoramic views of the city and sea. Admission: 10 RON.
  • Roman Mosaic — A vast Roman floor mosaic (600 m²) from the 4th century, discovered in 1959 beneath the city. Located right next to the Archaeological Museum. Admission with a combined ticket.

Seaside Resorts on the Black Sea Coast

  • Mamaia — Romania's most famous seaside resort, directly north of Constanța. An 8 km long sandy beach, hotels, clubs, and water parks. In summer: party atmosphere, crowded beaches, DJ sets. More for young partygoers than those seeking tranquility.
  • Vama Veche — The exact opposite of Mamaia: A small village right on the Bulgarian border, considered Romania's hippie paradise. Camping on the beach, bonfires, live music, alternative vibes. No luxury, but lots of atmosphere. In August, the "Stufstock" festival takes place here.
  • Eforie Nord & Eforie Sud — Family-friendly resorts with mud treatments (Lake Techirghiol) and quieter beaches. Popular with Romanian families.
  • 2 Mai — Next to Vama Veche, somewhat quieter. Natural beaches, cliffs, and less hustle and bustle. The insider tip among locals.
