Climate Overview
Scotland's climate is determined by the Gulf Stream and the Atlantic: mild, wet, and changeable. Winters are comparatively mild for this northern latitude (Edinburgh is on the same latitude as Moscow!), summers pleasantly cool. Rain can fall at any time — this is not a threat, but a fact.
| Region | Summer (Jun–Aug) | Winter (Dec–Feb) | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh & East Coast | 14–20°C | 1–7°C | Driest region, less wind |
| Glasgow & West Coast | 14–19°C | 2–8°C | Significantly more rain than the east |
| Highlands | 12–18°C | 0–6°C | Coldest region, snow on mountains |
| Islands | 12–17°C | 3–8°C | Windy, but mild thanks to the Gulf Stream |
Daylight: Scotland is far north (56°–59° latitude). In June, Edinburgh has over 17 hours of daylight, on the Shetland Islands it never gets truly dark (simmer dim). In December, it's only 7 hours. The long summer evenings are magical — perfect for hikes and pub evenings outdoors.
