Systembolaget — Sweden's Alcohol Monopoly
For most visitors, Systembolaget is one of the most surprising aspects of Sweden: Alcohol over 3.5% ABV is available exclusively in the stores of the state monopoly. No wine in the supermarket, no vodka at the gas station, no six-pack at the kiosk. There are only about 450 Systembolaget stores across Sweden — and they have limited opening hours.
Why?
Systembolaget has existed since 1955 as an instrument of public health: Sweden had a massive alcohol problem in the 19th and early 20th centuries (per capita three times today's consumption). The monopoly aims to reduce alcohol consumption by limiting availability and advertising — employees are not allowed to give purchase recommendations that encourage more buying (they advise excellently, but neutrally). The system is controversial, but the numbers speak for themselves: Sweden has one of the lowest alcohol consumption rates in Europe.

The Other Side
Despite the restrictions: The selection at Systembolaget is first-class — one of the best wine assortments in the world, as the state buys based on quality, not margins (no producer can "buy in"). The advice is competent and unobtrusive. And: Online ordering and picking up at the nearest store is possible.
Rules at a Glance
- Minimum Age for Purchase (Systembolaget): 20 years (strictly controlled — have ID, even if you look 35!)
- Minimum Age for Serving (Bars/Restaurants): 18 years
- Supermarket: Only light beer up to 3.5% (lättöl/folköl — tastes like little)
- Duty-Free Quota at the airport fully utilized — prices are 50–60% cheaper than at Systembolaget
💡 Tipp
Saturday before 3 p.m. to Systembolaget — closed on Sundays! Before Midsommar and Christmas, Swedes literally line up — better to go during the week then. The staff are true wine experts and happy to advise (in English). Tip: Systembolaget's in-house rating app is excellent — scan the barcode, read the review, make a better choice.
