The Swedish "Yes"

Swedes have a unique way of saying "Yes": a sharp inhalation through the mouth that sounds like a reversed sigh. This "inhaling yes" is heard everywhere — it signals agreement, attention, or simply "I'm listening." It sounds strange at first, but after a few days, you start doing it yourself.

💡 Tipp

Swedes appreciate every "hej" and "tack" in Swedish — even if they immediately switch to perfect English. The three most important words for a successful trip to Sweden: "Hej" (Hello), "Tack" (Thank you), and "Skål" (Cheers). The inhaling "Ja" is something you pick up automatically after a few days.
