Seoraksan National Park — Korea's most beautiful mountains

The Seoraksan (설악산, 1,708 m) is South Korea's third-largest mountain and the most spectacular — a dramatic landscape of granite cliffs, waterfalls, gorges, and ancient temples, making it the country's most popular national park. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1982.

The best hikes

• Ulsanbawi (울산바위): The most famous hike — 808 metal steps lead to the summit of a massive granite rock with a 360° panorama. 3.8 km one way, 3–4 hours round trip. Best in clear weather. The last 100 steps are steep, but the view over the valley and to the Sea of Japan is breathtaking.
• Biseondae (비선대): Easy hike along a mountain stream to a natural pool with turquoise water, framed by rock walls. 3 km, 1.5 hours round trip. Perfect for families.
• Daecheongbong (대청봉): The summit of Seoraksan — a challenging day tour (about 8 hours). Overnight stay in mountain huts possible (book in advance!).

Sinheungsa Temple & Bronze Buddha

At the foot of Seoraksan stands the Sinheungsa Temple (신흥사), one of Korea's oldest Zen temples (652 AD). In front of it sits a 14.6-meter-high bronze Buddha — the Tongil Daebul (Reunification Buddha), praying for Korea's reunification. The combination of the golden Buddha, the temple, and the granite peaks behind is one of Korea's most beautiful scenes.

Seoraksan Cable Car

For the less sporty: The cable car (₩11,000 round trip) takes you to the Gwongeumseong summit (about 700 m) in 5 minutes — with a fantastic view over the park, without sweat. At the top, there are short hiking trails between the rock formations.
