Uçhisar★★
Uçhisar — only 5 km from Göreme — is dominated by a massive, 60 m high tuff stone fortress (Uçhisar Kalesi), the highest point in Cappadocia. The rock is riddled like Swiss cheese — hundreds of cave rooms, tunnels, and passages that once served as homes, storage, and defense facilities.
From the top of the castle, you have the best 360° panoramic view over Cappadocia: Göreme, the Pigeon Valley, the fairy chimneys, and on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the volcanoes Erciyes (3,917 m) and Hasan Dağı (3,253 m). The view at sunset is overwhelming.
Uçhisar is quieter and more elegant than Göreme — here are some of the best cave hotels in Cappadocia (e.g., Museum Hotel, Argos in Cappadocia, Taskonaklar). Those seeking luxury in a surreal setting will find it here.
💡 Tipp
The castle of Uçhisar (entrance 100 ₺) is most beautiful at sunset — arrive 30 minutes before sunset and enjoy the view alone (most tourists come during the day). The hike through the Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) from Uçhisar to Göreme is an absolute dream: 4 km, 1.5 hours, no effort, maximum panorama.
