Arrival by Plane
Airports
Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD) is Hungary's only international airport and is located 16 km southeast of the city center. Numerous airlines fly cheaply and directly from Germany:
- Ryanair — From Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Frankfurt-Hahn, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, and other cities. Often the cheapest option: Tickets from 20–50€ one-way.
- Wizz Air — Hungary's own low-cost airline. From Dortmund, Memmingen, and other cities. Also from 20€.
- Lufthansa — From Frankfurt and Munich to Budapest. Flight time: 1.5–2 hours. Prices: 100–250€ return.
- Eurowings — From various German cities, often with affordable rates.
From the airport to the center:
- Bus 100E (Airport Shuttle): Direct bus to Deák Ferenc tér (city center), 30–40 min., 2,200 HUF (approx. 5.50€). The best option.
- Bus 200E + Metro M3: Cheaper alternative — bus to Kőbánya-Kispest, then Metro M3 to the center. About 45 min., regular public transport fare.
- Taxi: Only use Főtaxi (official taxi) — fixed price to the center approx. 9,900 HUF (approx. 25€). Book at the taxi stand at the exit, never accept informal offers.
- Bolt / Uber: Ride-sharing works in Budapest — often cheaper than a taxi.
Arrival by Train & Bus
Train Connections
Hungary is excellently connected by train — especially from Austria and southern Germany:

The Railjet Vienna–Budapest is the most comfortable connection: 2.5 hours, hourly, Wi-Fi, bistro car. Book tickets early through ÖBB or MÁV — saver fares from 19€. The Nightjet from Berlin/Munich travels overnight and arrives in Budapest Keleti in the morning — perfect for saving a hotel day.
Long-Distance Buses
- FlixBus — The cheapest option from Germany: Munich → Budapest from 15€, Berlin → Budapest from 20€. Travel time: 7–12 hours. Wi-Fi and power outlets on board.
- RegioJet — Czech provider with good connections from Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava. More comfortable than FlixBus, often cheaper than the train.
Car
From Munich, it's about 570 km (5.5h) via the Austrian motorway (vignette required: 9.90€/10 days) to Budapest. In Hungary, you need an E-Vignette (Matrica) for the motorways: 10 days for 5,270 HUF (approx. 14€), available online at ematrica.hu. The M1 motorway (Vienna–Budapest) is well developed. Speed limit: 130 km/h motorway, 90 km/h country road, 50 km/h city. Alcohol limit: 0.0‰ — absolute alcohol ban while driving!
Achtung
In Hungary, there is an absolute alcohol ban while driving: 0.0‰! Even a glass of wine or a small beer can lead to license revocation and a hefty fine. After wine tasting, always arrange a driver or take a bus/taxi.
Local Transport
Public Transport in Budapest
Budapest's public transport network is excellent, affordable, and comprehensive: 4 metro lines, tram, bus, trolleybus, and ferries. Operator: BKK (Budapesti Közlekedési Központ).
- Single ride: 450 HUF (approx. 1.15€)
- 24-hour ticket: 2,500 HUF (approx. 6.50€)
- 72-hour ticket: 5,500 HUF (approx. 14€)
- 7-day ticket: 6,300 HUF (approx. 16€)
Buy tickets in the BudapestGO app — cashless and easy. Important: Validate tickets before the journey! Fare evasion is strictly controlled — fine: 16,000 HUF (40€) on the spot, 32,000 HUF (80€) for later payment.
The Tram 2 along the Danube riverbank is the most beautiful "sightseeing tour" for the price of a single ticket — Parliament, Chain Bridge, Great Market Hall, all from the window.
Train (MÁV-START)
The Hungarian railway (MÁV) connects Budapest with all major cities. The three main Budapest train stations: Keleti (East — international trains), Nyugati (West — towards Balaton, Eger) and Déli (South — towards Balaton, Pécs).

Buy tickets online at mavcsoport.hu or jegy.mav.hu. InterCity trains (IC) are faster and more comfortable but require a surcharge/reservation. Regional trains (személyvonat) are slower but affordable.
Rental Car
For trips to Balaton, Tokaj, or the Puszta, a rental car is ideal. Prices: from 8,000–15,000 HUF (20–40€) per day for a small car. Providers: Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and local providers (cheaper but often without comprehensive insurance). Roads in Hungary are generally good — motorways modern, country roads solid. Note: On country roads, horse-drawn carts, tractors, and stray dogs may appear.
