Coffee Houses & Confectioneries

Budapest's coffee house tradition dates back to the 19th century, when the city boasted over 500 coffee houses. Here, writers, journalists, and revolutionaries gathered — the coffee house was living room, office, and salon in one. The most splendid have survived and are today living museums of Budapest's Fin de Siècle.

The Legendary Coffee Houses

  • New York Café — The "most beautiful coffee house in the world" in the Boscolo Hotel: marble columns, frescoes, gilded ceilings, crystal chandeliers — an orgy of neo-baroque. Opened in 1894, it was a meeting place for Budapest's literati. Legend has it that a writer threw the key into the Danube so it could never be closed. Espresso from 4€, cake from 8€ — you pay for the experience.
  • Café Gerbeaud — At Vörösmarty Square, since 1858 the first address for cakes and pralines. The Dobos Torte and Esterházy Torte are works of art here. Elegant Belle Époque decor, terrace on the square.
  • Central Kávéház — The intellectuals' coffee house, opened in 1887. High ceilings, wood-paneled walls, good lunch menu. Less crowded than the New York Café, but equally atmospheric.
  • Ruszwurm Cukrászda — Budapest's oldest confectionery (since 1827!) in the Castle District: tiny, crammed with Biedermeier furniture, legendary cream slice. Always a queue, but worth it.

The third-wave coffee culture has also conquered Budapest: Specialty coffee shops like Espresso Embassy, My Little Melbourne, and Fekete serve top-notch flat whites and pour-overs — often in converted historic spaces. Here, Habsburg splendor meets hipster minimalism, and the result is wonderful.

The Hungarian word for coffee house is kávéház, for confectionery cukrászda. In a traditional cukrászda, you order cake at the display and sit down — coffee naturally accompanies it. A krémes (cream slice) or rétes (strudel) are a must.

💡 Tipp

The best price-experience ratio: Instead of going to the New York Café (expensive, long queue), opt for the Central Kávéház — same Belle Époque atmosphere, significantly fewer tourists, and more affordable prices. Or head to Ruszwurm for the best cream slice in the city.
