Activities at Lake Balaton

Swimming & Beaches

Most beaches on Lake Balaton are beach baths (Strandfürdő) with an entrance fee (500–1,500 HUF / 1.50–4€), but with changing rooms, showers, slides, and gastronomy. There are also free beaches (szabadstrand) — especially on the northern shore. The water temperature reaches 25–28°C in July/August, and the lake is so shallow that it feels like a huge warm puddle. Attention: The lake can develop surprisingly rough waves during storms — pay attention to the yellow flag!

Cycling: The Balaton Bike Path

The Balaton Bike Path (Balaton-kör) circles the entire lake over 204 km — one of the most popular cycling routes in Central Europe. Mostly flat (southern shore) to hilly (northern shore), paved and well signposted. It can be comfortably completed in 3–5 days, with overnight stays in guesthouses and detours to wine cellars. Bike rentals: from 3,000 HUF/day (about 8€). For a shorter ride: The northern shore from Balatonfüred to Keszthely (60 km) is the most scenic section.

Sailing & Water Sports

Lake Balaton is a sailing paradise: constant thermal wind from the afternoon, no dangerous currents, and a lake as large as a sea. Rent sailboats or book courses in Balatonfüred, Siófok, and Keszthely. Stand-up paddling (SUP) is also ubiquitous — boards available for rent at every major beach (2,000–4,000 HUF/hour).

Wine at Lake Balaton

The wine region Balaton (together with Badacsony, Balatonfüred-Csopak, and Somló) produces some of Hungary's best white wines. The volcanic soils on the northern shore give the wines a unique minerality. Besides Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű, Furmint and Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) are also outstanding. The wine terraces on the Badacsony slope are the perfect place for a tasting with a panoramic view — directly at the winemaker, from 1,500 HUF (about 4€) for a tasting of 3–5 wines. The cellar lanes in Csopak and Ábrahámhegy are also worth a visit.

Lavender Fields

Between May and July, the hills around Tihany transform into a purple sea of lavender. The Tihany Levendula Ház offers guided tours, and everywhere in the villages, lavender sachets, oil, and ice cream are sold. The combination of lavender scent, lake view, and summer heat is intoxicating — an experience reminiscent of Provence, but much cheaper and less crowded.
