Thermal Baths — Practical Tips

Types of Thermal Baths

  • Gyógyfürdő (Healing Bath) — Medically recognized thermal bath with healing water, often with medical consultation and spa department. Széchenyi, Gellért, Hévíz.
  • Strandfürdő (Beach Bath) — Outdoor pools with thermal pools, often with slides and sunbathing lawns. Popular with families. Palatinus (Budapest), Hajdúszoboszló.
  • Barlangfürdő (Cave Bath) — In natural caves: Miskolctapolca is the most famous.
  • Tófürdő (Lake Bath) — In the natural thermal lake: Hévíz, the largest natural thermal lake in the world.

What to Bring?

  • Swimwear — Mandatory in all modern baths. In the Ottoman baths (Rudas, Király) partial gender separation during the week, mixed with swimwear on weekends.
  • Bath slippers / Flip-flops — The floors can be slippery.
  • Towel — Can also be rented in most baths (500–1,500 HUF / 1.50–4€).
  • Small change / Card — For locker and entry. Most baths accept cards.
  • Swim cap — Mandatory in some pools (will be indicated at the entrance).

Etiquette

  • Shower — Always shower before entering the pools.
  • Keep quiet — Thermal baths are places of relaxation, not parties (exception: Sparty parties at Széchenyi).
  • Limit bathing time — In hot pools (over 36°C) a maximum of 20–30 minutes at a time. Cool down in between.
  • Children — Not allowed in some healing pools (temperature, mineral concentration). Beach baths have separate children's pools.

Costs

Thermal baths in Hungary are surprisingly affordable: Simple provincial baths from 1,500 HUF (4€), Széchenyi Bath (the most expensive) from about 11,000 HUF (28€) with a cabin. Most good baths range from 2,500–5,000 HUF (6–13€) for a day ticket. Compared to Western European spas, a fraction of the cost — often with better architecture and real thermal water.

💡 Tipp

The best thermal experience outside of Budapest: Hévíz (thermal lake, year-round), Miskolctapolca (cave bath, unique), Hajdúszoboszló (largest beach bath, perfect for families), Egerszalók (thermal water flows over a natural sinter terrace — like a small Pamukkale!). All four are possible day trips from Budapest.
