About Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is the crown jewel of African wilderness — a nearly 20,000 square kilometer conservation area in northeastern South Africa that hosts the highest diversity of large animals on the entire continent. Since its founding in 1898 by Paul Kruger, it has grown to become the most famous national park in Africa, where the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo — can be observed in the wild. Over 150 species of mammals, 500 species of birds, and 114 species of reptiles live in an area as large as Israel. Herds of elephants with 50 or more individuals roam the savanna, lion prides rest under acacias, leopards nap on tree trunks, and at the waterholes, giraffes, zebras, and hippos gather — a vibrant ecosystem of overwhelming beauty. The self-drive safari is Kruger's special feature: a well-developed network of paved and unpaved roads allows visitors to go on a game drive in their own rental car. The thrill of spotting a rhinoceros by the roadside or yielding to an elephant is unparalleled. The park's rest camps — from Skukuza (the largest) to Satara and Lower Sabie — offer cabins, chalets, and campsites in the midst of the wilderness. At night, you can hear hyenas laughing and lions roaring. Guided bush walks, night drives with spotlights, and sunrise game drives complement the self-drive experience. The private game reserves on the western edge (Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Manyeleti) offer luxurious lodges with all-inclusive safaris, top-notch guides, and the highest leopard density in the world.

5 travel tips for Kruger National Park

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

Get up early — gates open at sunrise (around 5:30-6:00). The first 2 hours are the best time: predators are active, the light is magical, and there are few other cars.

Head to waterholes — especially in the dry season, animals gather at dams and rivers. Sunset Dam at Lower Sabie and Lake Panic at Skukuza are hotspots.

Don't forget to refuel — there are gas stations in the park only at the main camps (Skukuza, Satara, Letaba). Always refuel in time, the park is huge.

Sabi Sands for leopards — the private reserves have open borders to Kruger, but no fences. Guides are allowed to go off-road. 2-3 nights are ideal.

Malaria prophylaxis — Kruger is a malaria area, especially from November to April. Discuss prophylaxis with a doctor, use mosquito spray (DEET), and wear long clothing in the evening.

Food & drink in Kruger National Park

These specialties you must try!

Braai (South African BBQ) — boerewors sausage, lamb chops, and sosaties (skewers) over an open fire: every rest camp has braai spots, an evening safari tradition.
Bobotie — South Africa's national dish: spiced minced meat with an egg custard crust, raisins, and chutney, of Cape Malay origin.
Biltong & Droëwors — dried meat (beef, kudu, springbok): spicy-salty, the perfect safari snack in the car.
Pap en Wors — maize porridge with grilled boerewors: the simple, filling camp dish, served with chakalaka (spicy bean-vegetable relish).
Amarula Don Pedro — milkshake made from Amarula liqueur and vanilla ice cream: the South African dessert drink after dinner in the lodge.
