From Coimbatore, one can reach Ooty (Udhagamandalam), the Queen of Hill Stations at 2,240 meters, in 2-3 hours: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO World Heritage) steams through tea plantations and eucalyptus forests, starting in Mettupalayam, just 35 km from Coimbatore. The Siruvani Dam provides one of the sweetest drinking waters in the world (according to UNESCO) and is a popular excursion destination amidst tropical forests.
